The Best Business Card for Large Purchases
Even as a small business owner, you might still need to make large purchases with your credit card. For example, you may place orders in bulk for construction materials, hardware supplies and equipment. Other types of businesses will often make large purchases for travel, advertising and entertainment. The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, a Credit Cards House advertiser, has recently been upgraded to offer additional features that can make it the ideal card for large business purchases.

Earning Membership Rewards Points on Large Purchases
The Business Platinum Card® from American Express offers you 1.5x points on all purchases over $5,000, which is 50% more points than you’d receive on most other purchases below that amount (see benefit terms). And, for many small business owners, it’s not difficult to combine expected purchases in order to exceed the $5,000 threshold per transaction. In other circumstances, small business owners could earn 1.5x by prepaying a utility bill or even purchasing a vehicle or other expensive equipment with their Business Platinum card.
The new Business Platinum Card® from American Express is also offering 1.5x Membership Rewards points on purchases from several new categories. These include electronics goods retailers, software, and cloud service providers. You also earn 1.5x Membership Rewards points on purchases of construction materials and hardware supplies, and from shipping providers. The bonus rewards on purchases from these new categories are limited to the first $2 million of combined spending each calendar year (see benefit terms).
Not only does the Business Platinum Card® from American Express reward you heavily for your large purchases, but it also offers you a substantial discount when redeeming your rewards for flights booked through Amex Travel. When you use your points to pay for any business or first class flight, or flights booked on the carrier you selected for your $200 annual fee credit, you’ll receive 35% of your points back, up to 500,000 per year (enrollment required; see benefit terms). When you do this, you’ll receive 1.54 cents in value per point redeemed. When combined with purchases that earn 1.5 points per dollar, you’ll realize a total value of over 2.25 cents worth of rewards per dollar spent. This 35% points rebate is exclusive to the Business Platinum card, and isn’t found on the consumer versions of the Platinum Card.
Receive Enough Fee Credits to Offset the Annual Fee
The newly revised Business Platinum Card® from American Express offers over $1,000 in annual statement credits, including:
Up to $400 in Dell credits ($200 semiannually).
Up to $360 in credits toward Indeed hiring and recruiting products ($90 quarterly).
Up to $150 in annual statement credits toward select Adobe purchases.
Up to $120 in annual credits toward wireless companies, given as up to $10 per month.
Up to $189 in an annual credit toward a CLEAR expedited security screening membership when you use your card.
Up to $200 in annual airline fee statement credits.
Up to $100 in a statement credit toward a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application or renewal, every four years when you use your card.
(Enrollment required. See benefit terms.)
For many cardholders, the value of these fees can exceed the cost of this card’s $695 annual fee (see rates and fees). And for most businesses, the annual fee paid will qualify as a tax-deductible expense.
Enjoy Numerous Travel Perks and Benefits
Beyond the rewards and statement credits offered by the American Express Business Platinum, this card really makes travel much easier through its numerous perks and benefits. By utilizing the fee credits for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, you’ll enjoy expedited security screening at U.S. airports (enrollment required).
You can also use the CLEAR fee credit for priority access to all of the screening lines at select airports, bringing your wait time to an absolute minimum (enrollment required). The $200 airline fee credit can be applied to charges such as checked baggage fees, lounge day passes, and fees for inflight food and beverages (see benefit terms).
At airports, Business Platinum cardholders will enjoy access to over 1,400 lounges worldwide, including the expanding network of American Express Centurion lounges (enrollment required). At your destination, you’ll enjoy Gold elite status with both Hilton and Marriott hotels as well as elite status with both Hertz and National car rental — all of which allows you to receive additional benefits, upgrades and priority service (enrollment required).
Other travel benefits include Global Dining Access by Resy, which offers exclusive reservations to many of the world’s top restaurants. And if you’d prefer to fly privately, American Express’s Premium Private Jet Program features a 20% discount on Wheels Up Connect and a 40% discount on Wheels Up Core memberships, as well as a $500 or $2,000 credit added to your Wheels Up account to use toward an initial flight within the first year, depending on selected Wheels Up membership (enrollment required; see benefit terms).
If you regularly need to make large purchases for your business, then you need to use a card that will offer you more rewards for these kinds of transactions. By offering 50% more rewards for purchases over $5,000, and by including a new list of categories that qualify for bonus rewards, the Business Platinum Card® from American Express is now the best business card for large purchases.
