The Best Family Credit Cards
As you begin to grow your family, your spending habits start changing. No longer does a majority of your disposable income go towards entertainment. Now it’s spent on groceries, diapers, and kids clothes. Anyone that focuses on earning travel rewards will find that it also becomes much more difficult to use the rewards you earn. As your family starts growing, it’s also important to find the right credit card to fit your changing needs.
Here are some credit cards that are perfect for families of any size:
Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express
For families that tend to spend a lot of money each month at the supermarket, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express, a Credit Cards House advertiser, is the perfect card. You will receive 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 each year. You will also receive 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations and select U.S. department stores, and 1% back on everything else.
Amex is currently offering a $200 statement credit after you spend $1,000 within the first three months. If you are planning to make a big purchase, then you will be able to pay it off over time due to an introductory 0% APR for the first 12 months on purchases and balance transfers. After the introductory period is over it will change to a variable 18.49%-29.49% depending on your creditworthiness. This card does come with a $95 annual fee that is not waived the first year.
Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
Having a family means you need to be as flexible as possible. It’s no different with your credit card. If you prefer to use a rewards card on travel, then you need to have the flexibility to use your rewards in multiple ways. Because of this, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, is a popular choice. You will earn Ultimate Reward points with each purchase and you will have the flexibility to transfer these points to a number of different partners like Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, or Hyatt. Having this flexibility is crucial for booking family travel. You can also choose to redeem your Ultimate Rewards for cash back (at a reduced rate), giving you further flexibility.
When you sign up for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card you will receive 50,000 Ultimate Reward points after spending $4,000 within the first three months. You will receive 2x points on any travel purchases or at restaurants. For any other purchase, you will receive 1x points. There is a $95 annual fee which is waived for the first year.
Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard®
Another card that offers flexibility is the Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard®. With kids, it can be tough to travel at times that are off-peak. You need to schedule around school and all the other activities that families have going on. With the Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard®, you will be able to earn 2x miles on every purchase and your miles can be redeemed on any travel purchase. That means you can book any flight and any hotel room.
When you sign up you will receive 60,000 bonus miles after spending $5,000 in the first 90 days. This is enough miles for a $600 travel statement credit. In addition, you will receive 5% of your miles back upon redemption. There is a 0% introductory APR on balance transfers for the first 12 months. After that, it will move to a variable 18.24%-25.24% depending on your creditworthiness. You will be charged an annual fee of $89, but it’s waived the first year.
Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card
When you have kids, plans can change on short notice. Because of that it can get expensive if you need to change travel plans and pay rebooking fees. Southwest Airlines is the exception because they do not charge a fee when you need to change your flight. That makes the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card incredibly valuable for families.
When you sign up you will receive 40,000 points after spending $1,000 within the first three months of being a cardmember. You will earn 2x points on all Southwest Airlines purchases and 1x points on all other purchases. Each year on your card anniversary you will receive 6,000 bonus miles, which will help to offset the $99 annual fee.
The Bottom Line
As you start a family, the way you spend money begins to change. It’s important that your credit cards match your new spending habits. Finding a card that will reward your new spending habits is an important way to maximize your returns.
