Comparison: TJX Rewards Credit Card and TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard
Whether you’re shopping for back to school clothes or redecorating your house, there’s a good chance you’ve spent time in a TJ Max at some point this year. Or maybe you prefer Marshall’s or HomeGoods. Either way, you’re shopping at a TJX family store.
TJX is the parent company of the TJ Maxx and affiliated stores (Marshalls, HomeGoods and Sierra Trading Post). They’re a big name in affordable shopping, and you can stock up on everything from cookware to shoes to makeup in their stores. They offer two credit cards, the TJX Rewards card and the TJX Platinum Mastercard.
For fans of their stores, either card can be worth signing up for. Both cards come with a 10% off coupon that has to be used within 30 days as a sign-up bonus. Both cards also carry the same APR for purchases, and the same late fee of up to $35. Each card does come with major differences, and either one might be a good fit for you.
Card Overview: TJX Rewards Credit Card
Most store rewards cards limit you to using your points at one store. The TJX rewards credit card can be used at T.J. Maxx and its affiliated stores. You earn 5x TJX rewards points per $1 spent at T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and Sierra Trading Post or online. You can’t earn points or use the card at any other stores.
You do have to register online and become a TJX rewards member to apply for and use this card. This card is part of the larger rewards program that TJX as a company offers. Members also receive alerts when new shipments arrive at stores, and can be entered to win a $100 gift card each month every time you shop. (Entries are limited to three entries a day and 20 entries a month, and monthly giveaways are subject to change at the company’s discretion.)
Like most store rewards cards, the TJX rewards card comes with no annual fee. It does have an APR of 28.24% though, which is steep for any kind of card.
Card Overview: TJX Platinum Mastercard
This card can be used anywhere you can use Mastercard. It’s a regular credit card that simply rewards you more for shopping in the TJX store family.
You earn the same 5x points per $1 spent at T.J. Maxx and its affiliated stores, plus 1 point per dollar everywhere else. You earn $10 in rewards for every $200 spent at their affiliated stores. Your points don’t expire ever, but your rewards expire two years from the date of issue. Every time you reach 1,000 points you’re issued a $10 rewards certificate bonus.
Mastercard is accepted most places, so you can earn points quickly with this card without being limited to TJX affiliated stores only. The TJX Platinum Mastercard comes with the same 28.24% APR as the rewards card. It also has a 29.99% APR for cash advances.
Drawbacks to Each Card
Store cards offer benefits for shopping in their stores, but offer few benefits at other places. Both cards have a very high APR, which is calculated daily. If you can’t pay off your card in full each month, you’ll pay a lot in interest.
While your points don’t expire, after two years your rewards do. These cards might not make sense for you if you’re not shopping regularly at the TJX affiliated stores or if you carry a credit card balance month to month.
Bottom Line
Either of these cards are good for frequent TJX store shoppers who can afford to pay off their monthly balances in full. They both come with very high APR’s, so carrying a balance could quickly increase your debt.
